Visual Development and the future of software development: A conversation with Alex Noel from Plasmic

🎧 This blog post is based on episode #125 of our podcast. You can listen to the episode here

The speed at which the development of AI is progressing is groundbreaking, almost stressful. And ironically, developers themselves are sometimes the most affected by this. "Vibe coding" tools develop apps in seconds. Even no-code tools can't keep up with this speed. This raises the question: What does the future hold for no-code tools?

In episode 125 of the VisualMakers Podcast, we spoke to Alex Noel - Developer Relations Engineer at Plasmic. It was about the term visual development, the use of AI and the topic of open source.

Plasmic: A new kind of development

Plasmic is a visual development platform that makes it possible to create powerful, production-ready web applications without code. This offers both developers and non-developers the ability to quickly and efficiently design modern user interfaces. Alex explains that Plasmic stands out for its flexibility, allowing users to extend and customize their projects as needed. This flexibility is supported by the open-source nature of Plasmic, which allows developers to customize and extend the platform.

Visual Development: The next step after no-code?

While traditional no-code tools are often considered inadequate for complex projects, Plasmic positions itself as a visual development tool that bridges the gap between no-code and full-code. Alex describes how Plasmic enables developers to work both visually and with code, making it an ideal tool for hybrid development approaches. This approach could help increase the adoption of visual development platforms among traditional developers.

The role of AI in software development

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the development process is of course also a key topic. Alex explains that while AI is a powerful tool for generating content and prototyping, it is not yet capable of creating full production applications without human supervision. Nevertheless, he sees great potential in combining AI with no-code and low-code tools to speed up and simplify the development process.

Open source and community

Another important aspect of Plasmic is its open source philosophy. Alex emphasizes the benefits of this, such as the ability to host and customize the platform yourself, as well as the security provided by the transparency of the code. This openness also encourages collaboration within the developer community and enables the platform to be continuously developed.

Future outlook and integration with Supabase

Finally, Alex talks about Plasmic's future plans, including the introduction of new features such as comment integration and improving real-time collaboration. Of particular note is the integration of Supabase, which allows users to seamlessly connect powerful backend solutions with Plasmic. These developments show that Plasmic is committed to further strengthening its position as a leading visual development tool.
